Menopause
Menopause occurs with the decline of ovarian
function, which affects hormone levels. The ages at which
it can occur are normally between 35 and 58, mostly between
45 and 50 with an average age of 48. The menses may stop abruptly
or decrease in flow each month. In some cases there may be
an increased length of time between periods before they finally
stop and they may also become irregular.
Symptoms known as Menopause Syndrome include:
hot flushes; insomnia; headaches; palpitation; night sweating;
anxiety; irritability; restlessness; tinnitus; fatigue; emotional
volatility; lumbar pain and muscular aches. They may last
from months to several years and vary in severity.
According to TCM theory the kidney Jing Essence
has declined and is not able to fill Chong Ren channels (a
very important meridian channel for women’s health) used for
Qi and Blood when a woman reaches the age of 49. Meanwhile,
spleen and stomach start decreasing in their ability to produce
Blood and the effect flows through the whole body. Other organs
such as liver and heart may also be involved. However, the
deficiency of the kidney is the basic and primary factor (principal
character) in menopause syndrome.
An individual formula of Chinese herbal medicine,
taking into account the types of symptoms and individual constitution,
is a wise choice to improve the kidney essence, increase Qi
and Blood flow. Changes can be made in the heart and liver
channels. After the body goes back into balance between Qi
and Blood, Yin and Yang, the patient will significantly improve.
If the treatment is combined with acupuncture, a patient will
feel more relaxed and peaceful.
